Time prophesies

To get a better understanding of time prophesies in the Bible, it is important to let the Scripture interpret itself. Prophesies are written in symbols to prevent ungodly from understanding the meaning.

And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand (Luk.8, 10).

Also time is symbolic, and we must learn how to translate prophetic timing into our understanding of timing.

1

After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise (Num.14, 34).

2

For I have laid upon thee the years of their iniquity, according to the number of the days, three hundred and ninety days: so shalt thou bear the iniquity of the house of Israel.
And when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side, and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have appointed thee
each day for a year (Ezek.4, 5-6).

3

But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth (Rev.11, 2-3).

4

And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days (Rev.12, 6).
And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent (Rev.12, 14).

The first and the second verse in the list above, give us the secret of how to translate between prophetic time and real time. One prophetic time equals one calendar year. In the third reference we see that two prophetic times, 42 months and 1260 days are of equal length. And finally we find in the forth reference that 1260 days equals 3,5 times. Now let’s make a system out of this:

One day equals one year.

42 months equals 1260 days. This is true if one month equals 30 days, because 42 x 30 = 1260. We have then that 42 months equals 1260 days, which equals 1260 calendar years.

1260 days equals 3,5 times (years). That is true if one year equals 360 days, because 3,5 x 360 = 1260. We have then that 3,5 years equals 1260 days, which equals 1260 calendar years.

Finally: 42 months = 3,5 years = 1260 days, which equals 1260 calendar years. We also see that prophetic time is based on the Jewish lunar calendar which has 30 days in a month and 360 days in a year.

Now it is easy to understand the time given in prophesies. A table of prophetic times, their duration, start and finish are displayed below:

Since a day equals one calendar year in prophesies, we end up with the durations as listed in the table. But how can we know the time when these prophecies start to run? How can we know that 457 BC, 508 AD and 538 AD are starting points for these prophecies?

457 BC

The prophecy concerning the 2300 days in Dan.8, 14 is given without starting event.

And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed (Dan.8, 14).

According to Daniel, this prophecy came to him in the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar (Dan.8, 1). It is tempting to make this year the starting year of the prophecy, but instead we shall let God decide about this as well. Some years later, Daniel received a new prophecy, this time about a period of seventy weeks. The prophecy starts like this:

Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy (Dan.9, 24).

The word determined is translated from “chathak” which also means to cut off. The seventy weeks are cut off from a longer period. That longer period must be the 2300 days. The two time prophecies must have the same start. There is no problem to find that year because the starting event is given.

Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times (Dan.9, 25).

Three such commands where given, but only the last gave the Jews full independence and means to rebuild the Temple with its vessels that was captured by Nebucadnessar. We find the entire document for this command in the book of Ezra.

ROYAL DECREE

Artaxerxes, king of kings                                                   7th year of Artaxerxes the king (457 BC)

unto Ezra the priest, a scribe of the law of the God of heaven

Perfect peace, and at such a time!

I make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and of his priests and Levites, in my realm, which are minded of their own freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee. Forasmuch as thou art sent of the king, and of his seven counsellors, to inquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of thy God which is in thine hand; And to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counsellors have freely offered unto the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem, And all the silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill offering of the people, and of the priests, offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem: That thou mayest buy speedily with this money bullocks, rams, lambs, with their meat offerings and their drink offerings, and offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem. And whatsoever shall seem good to thee, and to thy brethren, to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do after the will of your God. The vessels also that are given thee for the service of the house of thy God, those deliver thou before the God of Jerusalem. And whatsoever more shall be needful for the house of thy God, which thou shalt have occasion to bestow, bestow it out of the king's treasure house. And I, even I Artaxerxes the king, do make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the river, that whatsoever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done speedily, Unto an hundred talents of silver, and to an hundred measures of wheat, and to an hundred baths of wine, and to an hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribing how much. Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be diligently done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons? Also we certify you, that touching any of the priests and Levites, singers, porters, Nethinims, or ministers of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them. And thou, Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God, that is in thine hand, set magistrates and judges, which may judge all the people that are beyond the river, all such as know the laws of thy God; and teach ye them that know them not. And whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment (Ezra.7. 12-26).

The decree to rebuilt Jerusalem was issued in the seventh years of Artaxerxes, which according to written history is dated to 457 BC.

508 AD

According to Daniel, the event that would start the 1290 days and the 1335 days, was the taking away the daily. A very good explanation of how this came about, is found here.

And from the time that the daily shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days  (Dan.12, 11)

538 AD

No other time prophecy in the Bible is better documented. Instead of making a lengthy and personal analysis of the information given in these verses, I will rely on a highly accurate source. You find it here.
